4 WEEKS PRIOR TO MOVE:
Set up a “move” file or folder.
- Set up a “move” calendar.
- Collect financial, tax and employment documentation needed for your loan.
- Have a garage sale.
- Donate unneeded furniture to charity.
- Contact schools for copies of student records.
- Schedule Mover. Check insurance coverage for moved items. Movers usually only cover what they pack.
3 WEEKS PRIOR TO MOVE:
- Review tax deductions on moving expenses.
- Call friends and relatives to let them know you are moving.
- Request change of address kit from post office.
- Notify your charge cards, magazine subscriptions, and banks of address change.
- Check out voter registration information for the new area.
2 WEEKS PRIOR TO MOVE:
- Contact insurance companies (life, auto, homeowners).
- Contact doctors, dentists for copies of medical records.
- Transfer stocks, bonds, bank accounts and contents of safe deposit boxes.
- Prepare a list of clothing that will not be packed with household goods.
- Take time to check off previous listed items while you still have time!
- Discard all aerosols, paint, oils, and other flammable or toxic chemicals.
- Make utility arrangements (telephone, gas, electricity, water, garbage, cable television). Remember, you must leave the utilities on until the buyers take possession even if you plan to vacate the property sooner.
Vacating – Final Things To Do
1 WEEK PRIOR TO MOVE:
DO NOT REMOVE any fixtures or window coverings that are attached to the home unless agreed in writing with buyers. These include: light fixtures, hose holders, ovens, stove, faucets and cabinets attached to the walls or floor.
- Plan for any needed cleaning of your new home prior to move in.
- Leave keys, garage door openers, instruction manuals, warranties and repair receipts, code to burglar alarm and phone number of monitoring service, if applicable and not discontinued, in a kitchen drawer
- Label items you will need to access easily and place them in separate room or closet.
- Drain outdoor equipment: Water hoses, propane tank from BBQ grill, gas and oil from lawnmowers
- Schedule with utility companies to have utilities turned on/off as applicable.
- Schedule with cable/internet company to have cable/internet/wifi turned on/off as applicable.
- Conduct a final review of the house, including: attic, stairwells, closets, cupboards, storage, garage, and behind doors.
- CLEANING: (If you need a cleaning service, call us for a referral)
- Vacuum carpets, sweep/mop floors
- Clean oven and stove tops
- Clean out your refrigerator and let it air out at least 24 hours before moving.
- Empty and wipe down all cabinets, drawers, counters, and sinks.
- Clean showers, tubs, and toilets.
- Sweep garage floor (remove items from shelves and cabinets).
- Remove ALL TRASH (You are responsible before vacating).
MOVING OUT DAY:
- RELAX!!!
Remember, items packed last will be unloaded first. - Conduct a final review of the house, including: attic, stairwells, closets, cupboards, storage, garage, and behind doors.
MOVING IN DAY:
- Have the house ready for delivery prior to the truck’s arrival.
